9. Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
This film was directed by Ridley Scott. It is set during the 12th century Crusades. The Kingdom of Jerusalem sends a French village blacksmith to assist them against Ayyubi Musulman Salahuddin. His goal is to take over the city from the Christians. The result is the Battle at Hattin.

8. 300 (2006)
Zac Schnyder is also known as “The King of SloMos, Dark Palettes”, or simply Zac, and he burst onto the scene with his visually stunning masterpiece. It was a combination of fantasy and history with the balance swinging strongly in favour of the former. Although 300 contains more violence than Troy, it is still a wonderful companion piece.

Scott is less consistent than me as a director so it was surprising that I was shown the film. It had stunning visuals and raw ambition. And some amazing performances. Maximus is an outstanding role for Russell Crowe. It shows that he’s a skilled filmmaker when at his best.

3. Spartacus (1960).

When evaluating Stanley Kubrick’s work, it is hard to rank ‘Spartacus’. This film is one of the best. Kubrick was a great director throughout his career. Kubrick, however, is not like other directors.

2. Ben-Hur (1959)
This 1959 epic historical-drama was a masterwork. Charlton Heston was the leading role.
Like other movies on the movie list, “Ben-Hur” is a must-see movie for movie-lovers. It was dismissed by critics as a commercial filmmaking exercise.
William Wyler was a visionary with an ambition beyond the reach of mainstream filmmakers Steven Spielberg or James Cameron. Wyler deserves more credit, however, for his masterpiece that transformed commercial filmmaking in Hollywood.
