What is our method?

Our travel insurance journey powered by partner CYTI was used to generate a quote for a travel policy for a family with four members (two parents aged 42-44 and two children 12-14 years old) who were going to Spain for a week in July 2022.

We did not have any pre-existing conditions, and we didn’t need extras like gadget insurance.

What are the rules on international travel?

Over the course of the pandemic, the rules and restrictions regarding international travel have been subject to frequent changes, sometimes at very short notice. Travellers from abroad to and from the UK are subject to various requirements depending on their vaccination status, age and the country they are travelling to.

Which countries can I visit?

Based on a variety of factors, the Foreign & Commonwealth Development Office gives advice about safe destinations to visit.

Before purchasing holiday or travel insurance, it is important that you check the FCO’s changes advice before making any purchases.

Travel insurance that is not in compliance with FCDO advice will be invalidated unless it was purchased from a specialist insurer who specified that coverage would be available for your destination.

Tips to make sure you are safe from a pandemic Book travel insurance

Travel insurance should be purchased at the same time you book your holiday. You will have cancellation coverage immediately.

Covid-19-based travel insurance will offer additional coverage, such as:

Cancellation coverage if you or a member of your party test positive within 14 days from your departure date You can cancel your reservation if Covid-19 is killed before you leave.

Cancellation coverage if your flight is cancelled because of the results of the required Covid-19 testing are not returned on time Curtailment coverage if you are denied entry to your destination country due to a failed test If you have to go into quarantine while you’re away, curtailment coverage is available.

Look for the sections or “key features” literature in the policy documents that describe the coverage for Covid-19-related risk. That will help you find the most appropriate policy. Be aware of any exclusions so you know what you can expect.

There are three levels of coverage that many insurers offer. They might be called Bronze, Silver, or Gold and they can be priced accordingly. For example, a Bronze policy may provide cancellation coverage up to PS2,000 while the Gold version might offer cancellation coverage up to PS5,000.

The amount of coverage that you need will determine how much premium you should pay.

Refer to the FCDO’s travel guidelines

If the FCDO makes changes to travel advice for your holiday destination, or if you are delayed by an airline or travel company without being refunded, it is unlikely that you will be covered.

You won’t be eligible to cancel if you don’t wish to travel. Your airline should offer a full refund or alternative departure date if your flight is cancelled. Some travel insurance companies will not pay if the airline offers vouchers rather than a refund.

Verify if there are any restrictions on Covid-19 in your destination

Keep in mind that certain destinations require coronavirus testing prior to you leaving the UK or upon your arrival. Make sure you check the rules for the country you are going to.

Access to restaurants, shops, and other facilities might be restricted for those who have been fully vaccinated. In some cases, this may include a booster jab or can show proof of a negative test. You should find out what you need to do based on your vaccination status.

You may be eligible for coverage if you quarantine during your holiday. Check with your insurance provider.

What other coverages does your insurance offer?

Legal expenses: If you are abroad and have suffered personal injury or any other disputed loss, your insurer will pay for legal fees.

Excess: Many insurance policies require that you contribute a certain amount to any claim you make. This is called the excess. This amount will be taken from your claim payout.
