Are Roku TVs Bluetooth-enabled? How to connect wirelessly

Recently, I purchased a TCL Roku TV. I was interested in watching a late-night show but didn’t want my family to be disturbed.

I instinctively reached out for my Apple Airpods but realized that I didn’t know if my Roku TV had Bluetooth.

Are Roku TVs compatible with Bluetooth?

Roku TV Wireless Speakers or Roku Smart Soundbar are the only Roku TV-compatible bluetooth devices. You can’t pair Bluetooth devices to your TV. However, Roku’s mobile application allows you to pair Bluetooth audio devices to your phone and then activate private listening within the app.

Technically, Roku’s stance is that, except for the Roku Bluetooth speaker products, Roku-based TVs don’t support Bluetooth.

Roku app allows private listening

However, there is a workaround. It is called “private listening” by the Roku app.

Just type “Roku”, in the Apple App Store, or the Google Play Store and the Roku app will be downloaded to your tablet or smartphone.

After downloading it, you will be prompt to search for Roku TVs nearby. Select it to connect.

You can use your Roku TV’s Roku App to connect it.

Bluetooth aside, this remote is a vast improvement over the original Roku remote.

You can use your phone’s remote to access a full keyboard for typing or searching for a title.

To use private listening, you will first need to choose the bluetooth audio device that you wish to connect to. Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and any other audio device can be connected.

Once you have your device prepared, pair it first with your tablet or smartphone’s Bluetooth.

Make sure your Roku TV and your smartphone/tablet are connected to the same wireless network. If you use different networks, it can cause problems.

After it has been successfully connected, open the Roku app and go to Remote. Next, click on the icon that looks similar to a pair headphones towards the bottom.

This will enable private listening. Your Roku TV should now play through your Bluetooth device.

Is it possible to have private listening for multiple people at the same time?

Private listening has a cool feature: you can have up four people listening simultaneously.

However, there are many requirements.

First, you cannot do this on a tablet. You must also ensure that Roku OS 8.1 is installed on your Roku TV.

You can check which version of Roku your Roku is running by going to System and then About.

Software updates will be automatically downloaded to most Roku TVs. Your TV will check for updates every 24-36hrs and, if it finds one, will automatically download it.

Now, the last requirement.

Private listening can be used by multiple people at the same time. Each person must have Roku and connect to the same network.

Connecting Bluetooth compatible devices

There are a few products that can connect directly to your Roku TV via bluetooth, as mentioned above.

Before you can set up these products (Roku TV Wireless speakers and Roku Smart Soundbar), make sure that your Roku TV, Roku TV and phone are connected to the same network.

Once you have confirmed that the devices are connected to the same WiFi, you can connect the device to your Roku TV.

Hold down the home button on your Roku remote, then scroll down to Settings, and finally Remotes and Devices.

Select Pair Bluetooth device.

After the Bluetooth pairing screen appears on your Roku TV’s smart device, transfer it to your phone to complete the setup.

Open Bluetooth settings on your smartphone or tablet and ensure it is enabled.

Wait until your Roku device appears on your phone’s Bluetooth List. Then, select it.

That’s it! You should now see your Roku TV showing that you are “connected”. It will indicate that you are connected to your smartphone. This is what we want.

Play a movie, or live TV. Your Roku Bluetooth device should control your Roku TV volume.

Disconnect Bluetooth device

You can disable Bluetooth from your Roku TV and forget about it.

Again, hold down the home button on your Roku remote. Scroll down to Settings and scroll down to Remotes and Devices. Finally, turn on Bluetooth devices.

Next, select your device and click Disconnect.

Once you have disconnected your Bluetooth device from your computer, you will not be able to access it again until you complete the setup process.

Conclusion

Roku TVs cannot connect to Bluetooth with Roku products. They have stated that Roku TVs are not compatible with Bluetooth.

There is still a lot of great work out there.

Roku has a feature called private hearing within its Roku app. This feature allows you connect Bluetooth audio devices to your Roku TV and your smartphone.

This allows you to connect Bluetooth headphones and speakers. Wireless headphones can be connected to up to four people simultaneously.

This isn’t the best solution for everyone, but it does make it easier to connect other Bluetooth devices. Here’s a list of TV brands and models with Bluetooth connectivity.
