Do you want a high-performance car? Think EV


One of the most common myths about electric cars (EVs), is that they don’t perform as well or as well as petrol-powered vehicles. Although performance is a complex topic, EVs perform better than their fossil fuel-powered counterparts in certain key areas.

High-performance EVs have a blistering acceleration and can reach impressive top speeds. They also offer excellent handling. Although gasoline-powered vehicles are stiff competition, they also benefit from more than 100 years of research and development. However, this race might be closer than you think.

How do EVs compare to gasoline-powered vehicles?

Gas-powered and electric vehicles are available in a variety of models: low-performance budget models, luxury models with high performance, and everything in-between. Gas vehicles are more common than electric ones, so there are both high-performance and low-performance models. However, electric vehicles offer a distinct advantage at both ends.


EVs are able to provide instant torque which is not possible with a gasoline engine connected to a transmission. This makes them more competitive against other gasoline-powered vehicles. An electric vehicle can accelerate almost immediately when you press the accelerator, while a gasoline-powered vehicle takes some time to start moving.

This explains why electric cars can accelerate to speeds of 0-60 MPH in real life. Some even reach 60 MPH in under two seconds. Although supercars powered by gas can be as fast as that, it is a very close race. This applies to all EVs, not just high-end ones.

When comparing overall performance, it is important to take into account top speed, handling, as well as other factors. Although electric vehicles may not always perform as well in these areas, it is a case-by–case situation. Some EVs are more efficient than others. Other EVs offer better handling and performance while others fall short, just as gas-powered cars.

Are EVs as fast as gas cars?

Are There Any EVs That Have Won Races?

The history of electric cars is as long-standing as that of gasoline-powered vehicles. One of the first American automobile races was held on a track. It was, according to some accounts, the first such race. The race featured two electric vehicles competing against a number of gas-powered cars. Riker Electric Vehicle Co. won the race.

Gas-powered vehicles have dominated the roads since that first race, more than 100 years ago. Electric vehicles are now in relative decline. Modern electric vehicles are not able to compete with gas-powered vehicles because of the strict regulations most races have about what kind of vehicles can be entered. There have been a few exceptions to this rule, however, where EVs have won races against gas-powered cars.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Unlimited division awarded two top spots to electric cars in 2015. This race allows any vehicle to enter as long as it passes safety inspections. This is the only race in which EVs can challenge gas-powered cars head to head.

The following year, a gas-powered vehicle won the title again. However, EVs were second and third. Electric vehicles have been competing and winning a lot of races since then.

There are many all-electric racing events, and EVs may race against gas-powered cars in rare cases. These races pit EVs against EVs in a variety of configurations and categories. This leads to breakthroughs and new developments in electric motorsports.

Are Affordable Electric Vehicles also able to perform well?

Although high-end electric cars are impressive in terms of performance, it is not hard to see that more affordable EVs offer many of the same benefits. The quick acceleration that allows EVs to boast the fastest 0-60 times around also applies to the smallest of family sedans.

The all-electric Chevy Bolt hatchback’s acceleration time from 0-60 MPH is six seconds. Similar vehicle, the gasoline-powered Chevy Bolt takes over 10 seconds to get from 0-60 MPH. Although affordable EVs may not perform to the same standards as more expensive models, they are still comparable to comparable gas-powered vehicles within the same category.

How to Choose a High-Performance Electric Vehicle

You don’t have to worry about the performance of an electric vehicle if you want it to perform as well or better than a gas-powered vehicle in the same category. You’ll find an EV that is as good or better than any gas-powered vehicle in your category if you consider things like cargo and passenger space, range and battery capacity, and maximum charge rate.

Performance is what you want, so make sure you have more money. If you intend to use the vehicle daily, you will need to think about battery capacity and range. However, you should also consider top speed and 0-60 MPH times.

The Future of Electric Vehicle Performance

Although electric vehicles are as old as gasoline-powered vehicles, they have largely been in the shadows. Nearly all the money and research that went into developing vehicles for gas has been spent on them. All of this engineering output can be seen on the roads and at the race tracks today.

With electric cars becoming more popular and more vehicles on the roads every year, advancements and developments are likely to accelerate with the same intensity as a high-performance EV leaping off the line. EVs are already the focus of races such as the Pikes Peak Unlimited Hill Climb. A variety of automakers also have their eyes on the high-performance market.

EVs have beaten gas-powered cars in top speeds at the moment, but future EVs will likely close that gap. The Tesla Model S was able to reach speeds of 160 MPH, and led the production pack until the Tesla Model S Plaid, which has a top speed exceeding 200 MPH, came along.

Other experimental EVs, such as the Rimac Nevera with a top speed 258 MPH, have gone even further. These and other EVs will soon dominate the high-performance market. Many of these advancements are likely to lead to improved EV performance.
