Histories have a precedent in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl hangover

The Kansas City Chiefs were regarded as a favorite to win the Super Bowl in 2021.

They have been a middling team at the halfway point of the season. Their performance is not surprising if you consider the past performances of teams that lost in Super Bowls.

Half of the 20 Super Bowl-winning teams — beginning with the 2000 New York Giants — missed the playoffs in the next year.

This includes the San Francisco 49ers who were defeated 31-20 by the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIIV. The 49ers were plagued by injuries and fell to 6-10 last season.

The Chiefs lost Super Bowl LV 31-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to conclude their 2020 season.

After defeating the Giants 20-17 on Monday night, the Chiefs improved their record for 2021 to 4-4. However, that performance was not inspiring. The Chiefs had more turnovers than New York, and they were penalized 12 times for 103 yards.

Andy Reid, Chiefs head coach, said that “Everything’s not beautiful right at the moment.” “But we’re fighting though that.”

Reid has been in a similar situation after a Super Bowl defeat before.

After losing the Super Bowl in 2000, his 2004 Philadelphia Eagles were one of 10 teams to not make it to the playoffs. They lost 24-21 to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX, and then went on to fall to 6-10 in 2005.

Of course, the Patriots are an exception to the rule. Both their Super Bowl losses to Super Bowl XLVI’s Giants and Super Bowl LII’s Eagles have seen them return to the playoffs.

The Chiefs will need to improve their ball security and reduce penalties if they want to be able to follow the example of the Patriots.

Patrick Mahomes is a major culprit in this category. He leads the NFL with 10 interceptions and contributes to the Chiefs’ 19 giveaways for the year. This is more than any other NFL player.

Mahomes stated, “You hope that the turnover luck turns the other way.” “But we have to execute at an even higher level because of that.”

The Buccaneers gave a blueprint for the rest of the NFL in how to slow Mahomes’ explosive offense. Pressure with the front four, don’t blitz and take away the deep pass to force the Chiefs down the field. This will allow them to make mistakes.

Mahones said, “You’ve seen in every game that there are times when we stall and don’t execute.”

The Chiefs have also seemed less disciplined and focused after their back-toback Super Bowl trips. They have committed 56 penalties for 466 yards. This is the 28th-highest NFL record.

Chris Jones, a defensive lineman, stated that “we have to stop beating ourselves up.”

Jones, Chiefs’ top defensive player, and Frank Clark collectively make $40.5 million this season, but only four sacks to prove it.

Although Jones and Clark, two of the best pass rushers on the team, have been out of action for several games, the Chiefs still have 11 sacks, which is the third-worst in the league.

After trading Melvin Ingram, a sixth-round draft choice for the Chiefs, they hope to boost their pass rush. He signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being brought in by the Chiefs to work out.

Ingram played just 17 snaps for the Steelers in his last game. He had one sack. The 10-year-old veteran has had 50 sacks during his NFL career.

Tyrann Mathieu, Chiefs safety, said that he liked the game’s “play” style.

Mathieu and Travis Kelce, two of the Chiefs’ veteran stars — possibly due to the wear and tear of a long playoff run — appear less explosive to the Chiefs. This is a sign of how difficult it can be to recover and make it to the Super Bowl.

The 2018 Los Angeles Rams and the 2019 49ers were the last teams to lose in Super Bowl. They did not make it to the playoffs.

Reid was confident in his team, but acknowledged its difficulties.

He said, “We’re a brand new group, it is a new team and each year is different.” Things aren’t always as easy as they used to be, but we will get there.
