Screen recorders on Windows and Mac are free and can be used to convert meetings, projects, or games into movies.
You can capture all that is happening on your screen with some amazing tools that are completely free and without any limitations.
OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the best screen recorder that we have tested. It can record everything on your computer screen, as well as capture video from your webcam to be used for picture-in, or even audio recording. You can save the recording to a file or stream them through the service of choice.
You can even get it on Windows 11 via the redesigned Microsoft Store.
OBS Studio is a great choice for gamers and professionals alike. There are however other options. A simpler tool may be sufficient if you are only looking to capture a few seconds of footage.
This list has something for everyone, whether you are making a tutorial video for YouTube, recording a Let’s Play video or capturing a video conference.
OBS Studio is the best free screen recorder if you are a gamer. OBS Studio, unlike the popular FRAPS, which limits you to recording for 30 seconds per stretch, unless you have a licence and adds a watermark on the footage, is completely open-source and free to use.
OBS Studio allows streaming and recording in high-definition, without any restrictions. You can stream live to Twitch and YouTube gaming, save your projects and return to them later or encode your footage as FLV and save it locally.
OBS Studio records directly from your graphics card. This allows you to capture full-screen games (other screen recorders only can record if the game’s windowed). You can also use customizable hotkeys for control of the recording. OBS Studio can make full use of multi-core CPUs to improve performance and record at 60FPS or higher.
Although it may take some time to get it set up the way you want, OBS Studio is hands down the best screen recorder for gamers.
FlashBack Express
Flashback Express is second in our list of favourite screen recorders, OBS Studio being our favourite. FlashBack Express is a free version that you can use to record screen recordings. It won’t place watermarks on your recordings and doesn’t impose time limits. Additionally, FlashBack Express has many tools and features that rival premium programs. FlashBack Express’ interface is easier than OBS Studio. This makes it a great choice for anyone who has never used a screen recording program.
Recording can be done from any part of your screen or window. You also have the option to record from a specific area or a webcam. After you are done, you will see your recording in a simple editor. Here you can crop, trim, and export it to YouTube, FTP servers, or your computer.
This is pretty standard stuff for a screen recorder. But, if you take the time to explore Flashback’s advanced settings, you’ll discover a wealth of carefully designed settings that will make your desktop recordings look professional. Flashback can hide passwords, replace your wallpaper with a plain wallpaper, hide messy desktop icons and highlight your mouse pointer for easier navigation. You can also set the frame rate per second in a gaming mode.

Debut Video Capture is capable of recording screen footage without watermarks or time limits. It can also record footage from other devices such as webcams and security camera cameras. You can set it up to record on a schedule so that it becomes the central hub of your home security system. It’s not bad for a program that is completely free for personal use.
