Fixing the Oculus Quest Blackscreen of Death

These are some tips to help you if your account screen isn’t showing the game or your account.

Some users encounter the black screen of death when they use Oculus Qest 2 or OculusQuest 3. The black screen of death is a black screen that appears completely black or lit up with no content. Sometimes, the Oculus logo might appear before the black screen kicks into effect. Black screen of death can be caused by a variety of issues, including dead batteries and stuck updates, corrupt firmware and hardware issues.

Causes of Oculus Quest Black Screen of Death

Oculus Quest’s black screen of death can be caused by a few things. The headset may not turn on if the batteries are low or dead. A black screen can also be caused by stalled or interrupted firmware updates. If you have changed your Oculus password, and the Oculus cannot log in, it might get stuck trying to update. This will result in a black screen. A similar problem can occur if the firmware is corrupted or the hardware is damaged.

How to fix the Oculus Quest Blackscreen of Death

These fixes will fix your Oculus black screen problem.

  1. Charge the headset. The headset will not charge if it isn’t charged. You can leave the headset alone for a few minutes while you plug it into a USB charger. Try a different charger or a compatible charger if the headset isn’t charging. A lower amperage charger will give you a longer charging time because the Oculus charger produces 2A.

  1. Open the Oculus menu. If you are faced with a black screen, press the Oculus button on your right controller and the menu button on the left controller. To see if the black screen disappears, open an app and access the menu.

  1. Use the Oculus App. If it doesn’t automatically log in, open the Oculus app and load it on your phone. You can launch a game using the app if it recognizes your headset. Once the game has been launched, you can put your headset on to verify that the black screen issue is fixed.

Note:This is most likely to be the cause of the boot loop and black screen of death.

  1. Keep the headset on, and make sure it is plugged in. If the headset is still not charging and there’s no light on it, make sure to leave it on for at least 30 mins. If your headset is trying to update itself, you can leave it alone and plug it into power.

Note:After you have successfully signed in to Oculus, everything should be working on Wi-Fi. It may take some time to update the headset depending on how fast your network is. Manually updating the Quest 2 or Quest 2 can be done.

  1. The proximity sensor should be checked. You’ll find the proximity sensor between your headset lenses. To test if the black screen disappears, cover the sensor with your thumb. If this doesn’t work, you can try wiping the sensor with a microfiber cloth.

Note:If the black screen does not disappear when you cover it with your thumb but stays on when you wear the headset, you should check for any gaps or damage that might be allowing light through the foam spacer or insert.

  1. Do a hard reboot. If the screen turns black after pressing the power button, hold it down for at least 10 seconds. The Oculus Quest will undergo a hard restart by pressing the power button. This can resolve many problems such as the black screen of death.
  2. Use the bootloader menu to reboot. You can perform a hard restart using the power button only.
    1. Hold the volume down , and power buttons at least 10 seconds each.
    2. Use the volume buttons to highlight boot device
    3. To hard reboot your Quest, press the power switch.
  3. Perform a factory-reset of the Quest and Quest 2. This is a drastic measure as it deletes all your data and returns the headset to its original factory state. Before you attempt this fix, make sure that you have exhausted all other options. All data will be lost and you will have to re-download it.
    1. Hold the volume button and power buttons for at least 10 second.
    2. Highlight Factory reset by using the volume buttons
    3. Click the power icon.

What happens if the Black Screen of Death persists?

If the black screen of death persists after you have tried all these solutions, it is likely that your hardware is defective. This is especially true if your factory reset fails to resolve the problem, or if the bootloader is not accessible and you cannot perform a factory restart. Oculus will likely need to assist you and repair or replace your headset.
